Fucidin 500 mg
Fucidin 500 mg (15 pills) is indicated in the treatment of all staphylococcal infections due to susceptible organisms such as: cutaneous infections, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, septicaemia, wound infections, endocarditis, superinfected cystic fibrosis.
Fucidin tablets contain the active ingredient Sodium Fusidate, which is the sodium salt of a medicine called Fusidic Acid. Fusidic Acid is a type of medicine called an antibiotic. It is used to treat infections caused by a type of bacteria known as staphylococci.
Fucidin works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, replicate and increase in numbers. Fucidin 500 mg (15 pills) doesn't directly kill the bacteria, but leaves them unable to increase in numbers. The remaining bacteria eventually die or are destroyed by the immune system. This treats the infection.
Fucidin can penetrate into body tissues well. This makes it useful for treating staphylococcal infections of bones (osteomyelitis) or the heart. It is often used in combination with another antibiotic that is active against staphylococci, particularly for severe infections and when prolonged therapy is needed. This is to avoid problems with the bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotic.
Side Effects: diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, skin rash.
